Convert HEIC to PNG

Convert HEIC to PNG when the photo's next stop is an editor, not an inbox. PNG is lossless, accepted by every design and photo tool ever shipped, and gives an iPhone photo a stable, future-proof form before serious work begins.

How to convert HEIC to PNG

  1. 1

    Open the iPhone photo

Drop the HEIC into the box above; it's decoded on-device with libheif. For a Live Photo, the still frame is what gets converted.

  2. 2

    Nothing to dial in

PNG is preselected and lossless, so there's no quality slider here — the decoded photo is stored pixel for pixel, ready for serious editing.

  3. 3

    Download your editing master

Click Convert & download and expect a much larger file — often ten times the HEIC. That's the right trade before background removal or compositing; use JPG or WebP for sharing.

Why convert HEIC to PNG?

  • PNG adds no second round of compression — the decoded photo is stored exactly as-is.

  • Every editor, from Photoshop to free web tools, opens PNG; plenty still stumble on HEIC.

  • It's the right starting point before background removal or compositing, since PNG can carry the resulting transparency.

  • PNG has been stable since the 1990s — a safer long-term bet than a codec-encumbered format.

What actually happens to your file

The HEIC is decoded on-device with a WebAssembly build of libheif, and the pixels are written to PNG without any further loss — what the decoder produced is exactly what's saved. Brace for size: HEIC is one of the most efficient photo formats and PNG one of the least, so a 2 MB iPhone photo can become a 20 MB PNG. That's the cost of losslessness, and it's worth paying for editing masters but wasteful for sharing — pick JPG or WebP for that. Live Photos are stored as a still HEIC plus a separate video; the converter reads the still.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the PNG so much larger than my HEIC photo?

HEIC uses video-codec compression to make photos tiny; PNG stores every pixel losslessly. A 10× size increase is normal. If size matters more than perfect fidelity, convert to JPG or WebP instead.

Is HEIC to PNG conversion lossless?

The PNG encoding is completely lossless. The only compression in the photo's history is what the iPhone applied when it took the shot — converting adds nothing further.

What happens to a Live Photo?

A Live Photo is a still HEIC paired with a short video file. The converter decodes the still frame; the motion part isn't included in the PNG.
